Triple Jump: Where Power Meets Precision.

What is triple jump?

Triple jump is an exciting and dynamic athletics event that combines speed, strength and rhythm. Often described as “hop, step and jump,” the athlete builds momentum on a runway and completes a sequence of three continuous movements before landing in a sandpit.
Unlike the long jump, where there’s only one take-off, triple jump demands precise technique and timing across all three phases. It’s a powerful display of coordination and explosive athleticism.

A brief history

Triple jump dates back to the ancient Olympic Games in Greece, where it was part of the original pentathlon. However, the event we know today developed in the modern era, debuting in the first modern Olympics in 1896 in Athens.
Originally dominated by Irish and American athletes, the event has evolved significantly in technique and global popularity. Women’s triple jump was added to the Olympics much later, making its debut in 1996 in Atlanta.

The three phases

A successful triple jump consists of three distinct phases, each with its own technical demands:

1. Hop

The athlete takes off from one foot and lands on the same foot. This sets the rhythm and direction for the rest of the jump.

2. Step

From the landing of the hop, the athlete immediately transitions to the opposite foot. Balance and control are key here to maintain speed.

3. Jump

Finally, from the step, the jumper launches into the air and lands in the sandpit, aiming for maximum distance without losing form.
