Training

At Beyond the Board, we focus on building powerful, technical and confident triple jumpers. Our training sessions combine explosive drills, strength development and detailed technique work – all in a supportive and driven environment. Together, we explore how to improve each phase of the jump, step by step.

Since we don’t have our own training infrastructure, we rely on the goodwill and generous support of local clubs to access suitable facilities. We complement this with creative use of public spaces – such as the long staircase above the Vaartkom in Leuven – to meet our specific training needs. We’re deeply grateful for all the help we receive in securing training locations that allow our athletes to grow and thrive.

Infrastructure

The athletics infrastructure of Hannut Athlétisme

Thanks to the generous support of the Hannut city council, we are proud to train at the excellent facilities of Hannut Athlétisme, the home club of Ilona Masson. During the winter months, their outstanding indoor hall offers us a warm and professional environment to continue our technical and physical development. In summer, we make full use of their high-quality outdoor track. The track – and the staircases at both sites – are forever marked by the sweat and determination of our athletes. Hannut has become our home ground, a trusted foundation for our success.

The public steps in Leuven

The big staircase above the Vaartkom in Leuven is quickly becoming legendary among Beyond the Board athletes. Under the watchful eye of coach Michel, athletes jump, run, and skip their way up these steps – again and again – building strength, tendon resilience, endurance, and explosive power. It’s a brutal but essential part of our training philosophy. You haven’t truly trained for triple jump until you’ve survived a ‘trappentraining’ on these stairs.

The Gym

In addition to the functional training covered above, a significant part of our program takes place in the gym. Building pure strength is essential – and that means lifting heavy. Don’t be fooled by our athletes’ lean builds: the weights they move would surprise even seasoned bodybuilders. It’s focused, powerful work that lays the foundation for every explosive jump.

The Physiotherapist's practice

Injury and recovery are part of every athlete’s journey. The physiotherapy practice is yet another battleground where blood, sweat, and tears are shed – sometimes quite literally – in the fight to return to, and ultimately surpass, former strength. It’s a place of pain, patience, and perseverance, where true resilience is forged.

Training

Training at the elite level is a world apart from any ordinary workout. It’s not just about fitness – it’s about relentless focus, extreme effort, and unwavering determination. This is blood, sweat, and tears on turbo. Our video gallery offers a raw glimpse into the grind behind the glory – the strength, precision, and power it takes to chase every centimeter beyond that board!
